buddhabrarian.org

buddhabrarian.org is a work in progress bringing together two passions of mine: spiritual practice (Buddhism in particular) and librarianship.

The two traditions have several notable similarities. The principles of both Buddhism and librarianship support open access to information without demanding faith or belief in a particular doctrine or point of view. Both encourage individual exploration and direct experience, supported by guidance from the teacher or librarian, but not replaced by it.

In both the library and Buddhist traditions, the possibility for acquiring knowlege, understanding, and enlightenment is available to all, not reserved for an elite few. The responsibility for developing that knowledge, understanding, and enlightment rests with the individual.

These common principles guide all areas of my life, including both my work and my spiritual practice. It is my curiosity and thirst for learning and growth that drew me both to Buddhism (nearly 20 years ago) and to Librarianship (much more recently). Each tradition simultaneously quenches and ignites my thirst on a daily basis. It is probably no coincidence that both Buddhists and librarians are fond of saying that "the only thing constant is change."
